July 2026 Tax & Compliance Update: Super, BAS & ATO Changes

As we settle into the new financial year, there are several important tax, compliance and bookkeeping changes we think you should be aware of.

From updates to superannuation obligations through to new ATO rates and upcoming reporting deadlines, staying informed now can help you avoid unnecessary penalties and extra administration later.

Super Guarantee Changes Under Payday Super

The introduction of Payday Super is changing how Super Guarantee (SG) shortfalls are managed.

Previously, employers who identified a shortfall were required to lodge a Super Guarantee Charge (SGC) statement. Under the new arrangements, employers no longer need to lodge these statements immediately and may instead wait for the ATO to identify any unpaid super.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean waiting is the best option. The ATO has introduced a 20% reduction in the administration component for voluntary disclosures, making it worthwhile to address any issues early rather than waiting for the ATO to make contact.

If you’re finding the transition to Payday Super challenging or you’re unsure whether your super obligations have been met correctly, speak with our team. We can help you resolve any issues before they become more costly.

New Cents Per Kilometre Rate

The ATO has increased the cents per kilometre rate to 91 cents per kilometre for the 2026-27 financial year.

If you use the cents per kilometre method to claim work-related car expenses, make sure you’re using the updated rate when preparing your records and tax return.

Earning Income Through Digital Platforms?

If you’ve earned income through platforms such as Uber, Airbnb, Airtasker, Uber Eats, DoorDash, Stayz or similar online platforms, it’s important that you let us know.

The ATO now receives more information directly from digital platforms, making it easier to match income with tax returns. Providing this information early helps ensure your return is accurate and avoids any unexpected ATO enquiries.

ATO Debts on Hold

If you currently have an ATO debt that has been placed on hold, don’t assume it will stay that way indefinitely.

If you’re concerned about an existing tax debt or your ability to meet future obligations, reach out to us as soon as possible. We can discuss your options and help you stay ahead of any issues before they escalate.

Bookkeeping & Compliance Reminders

As we begin the new financial year, here are some important dates and reminders to keep in mind.

Payroll & Super

  • Annual STP Finalisation for the 2025-26 financial year was due 14 July.
  • Annual STP Finalisation for Closely Held Employees is due 30 September.
  • June quarter Superannuation was due 28 July.
  • Remember that Payday Super payments processed in July are applied to your oldest outstanding super liability first. To help avoid late payment issues for July and reduce additional bookkeeping work, June quarter super should ideally be paid by the first week of July.
  • Review your Payday Super lodgements regularly for any rejected or returned payments.

BAS Due Dates

  • June Monthly BAS: 21 July
  • June Quarterly BAS:
    • Self-lodgers: 11 August
    • Registered tax agent clients: 25 August
  • Annual BAS: 31 October

GST Reporting Elections

Businesses voluntarily registered for GST (with turnover under $75,000) may choose to change their reporting frequency:

  • Monthly to Annual: 1 July – 21 August
  • Quarterly to Annual: 1 July – 28 October

Payroll Tax

If you’re liable for State Payroll Tax, remember to review your taxable wages against the relevant thresholds.

  • Annual Reconciliation: 21 July
  • Ongoing periodic returns are generally due on the 7th day of the following month.

Preparing for Tax Time

To help us prepare your 2025-26 financial statements and tax returns as efficiently as possible, please send through:

  • Bank statements showing balances as at 30 June 2026
  • Loan statements
  • Finance documents
  • Any other information relevant to your business or investments

Providing these documents early helps us complete your work sooner and identify planning opportunities for the year ahead.

If you’re unsure whether any of these updates affect your business, please get in touch. Our team is here to help you stay compliant and make the most of every available opportunity.
